S/4 HANA Demo Series: 09 – Carrier Selection in SAP TM using Carrier Determination Profile

Introduction

Determining the appropriate carrier for a shipment is a critical function within TMS, especially given the variety of business rules that may apply. For some organizations, this process is straightforward and driven by a few key input parameters, while others require a more complex approach involving transportation‑lane–based determination and incompatibility checks.

SAP S/4 HANA Transportation Management provides multiple capabilities to support nearly all carrier‑determination scenarios for shipments and freight orders. Both manual carrier assignment and automated determination using lane master data are widely used. Recently, SAP introduced a new rule‑based carrier determination feature for freight orders, reducing the need for extensive master data maintenance related to transportation lanes and routes.

The Carrier Determination Profile is an intelligent automation framework in SAP Transportation Management that automatically selects the most appropriate carrier for Freight Units (FUs), Freight Orders (FOs), and Consignment Orders based on predefined business rules. These rules may consider factors such as origin and destination locations, along with other logistical attributes. This capability streamlines planning, reduces manual effort, ensures consistent decision‑making, and helps organizations optimize transportation cost and service performance. The framework evaluates rules in a defined sequence and applies the first matching rule, providing full control and transparency over carrier assignment.

Demo

In this demo, we illustrate how SAP TM automatically determines the carrier for a Freight Order using predefined rules configured in a Carrier Determination Profile. The profile consists of multiple rule lines driven by business conditions such as origin and destination locations.

When Freight Units are created from Sales Orders and during Freight Order creation, SAP TM evaluates the rules in sequence and assigns the carrier automatically that meets the defined criteria. As part of the demo, multiple Freight Units from different customers are manually consolidated in the Transportation Cockpit into a single Freight Order, and the carrier is automatically assigned based on the Carrier Determination Profile. Although carrier determination can also be executed at the Freight Unit level also, this demo focuses specifically on determination during Freight Order creation.

The demo also highlights that planners retain full flexibility: even when a carrier is automatically assigned through the profile, users can manually select a different carrier. SAP TM respects this manual override and does not replace it with the profile‑suggested carrier. The scenario then proceeds through execution and Freight Settlement Document (FSD) posting. Overall, the demo showcases the efficiency of automated carrier determination while demonstrating the system’s ability to accommodate real‑world exceptions such as spot carriers or capacity limitations.
