S/4 HANA Demo Series: 06 – Integrated Sales Order Scheduling using TM Default Route, Lane and Straight-line duration
Introduction:
In many order-to-cash scenarios, it is crucial for sellers to provide a reliable delivery date to customers during the creation of a sales order. Accurate confirmation of the delivery and loading start dates enables customers to plan downstream activities effectively, while also allowing warehouse and production teams to align their operations accordingly.
In earlier SAP S/4HANA releases, sales order scheduling relied on the maintenance and determination of Logistics Execution (LE) Routes. These routes were used to calculate transit times during scheduling. However, transit times were also maintained separately in Transportation Management (TM) master data—such as lanes and default routes—leading to redundant data maintenance and potential inconsistencies between LE and TM transit times, which could impact scheduling accuracy.
With SAP S/4HANA 2023 FPS1, this challenge is addressed by enabling direct use of TM master data during sales order scheduling. The Transportation Requirement Scheduling (TRS) module serves as the foundation for this functionality, supporting route determination, transportation duration calculation, and scheduling of transportation requirements. TRS can be leveraged to calculate delivery dates during sales order creation, and its Test Cockpit allows users to simulate and validate scheduling outcomes.
By centralizing master data in TM, the need to maintain legacy LE routes (e.g., LES-TRA) are eliminated, resulting in streamlined data management and seamless integration with Sales and Distribution’s Available-to-Promise (ATP) functionality. This integration enhances ATP reliability, simplifies master data setup, and improves customer satisfaction through more accurate and dependable delivery commitments.
In the recent SAP S/4HANA 2025 release, similar functionality has been introduced for Stock Transport Order (STO) scheduling. However, the current demo focuses on sales order scheduling using TM data; STO scheduling will be covered in a separate demo.
Demo:
In this demo, we configured the requirement routing profile in Transportation Management (TM) to prioritize transit time sources in the following sequence: default routes first, followed by lanes or network paths, and finally straight-line duration. Three customer sales orders with different customers were created to illustrate this setup:
- Sales Order 1 showcases the use of default routes with predefined transit time.
- Sales Order 2 has no default route, but TM lanes are maintained with transit time.
- Sales Order 3 lacks both default routes and lane master data for the origin-destination pair.
This setup demonstrates how different TM master data sources are utilized in sales order scheduling based on the defined sequence. The delivery and loading dates in each sales order are updated accordingly, showcasing the flexibility and accuracy of TM-driven scheduling. Importantly, this demo highlights that LE-TRA routes are no longer required to derive transit times during sales order scheduling, reinforcing the benefits of using TM master data directly.
